Iguanas Lose Late Lead, Draw For Second Straight Week
Eagle Street FC remains undefeated after late goalUpdated Monday June 17, 2013 by Eric Thompson.
Through the first four weeks of the 2013 season, Eagle Street FC had been dominating the Monday Division 2 competition. They had a perfect 4-0-0 record with an amazing +24 goal differential including a 3-1 victory over Iguanas earlier this year.
Eagle Street FC would not coast to victory like they had so often to begin the season. Iguanas gave the top team in the table everything they could handle.
The game got off to a rough start for Iguanas as Eagle Street scored early. A well-placed cross split the Iguanas defense and the one-time shot beat substitute keeper George Scheunemann. (Jason Radatz was sitting out the game after receiving a controversial red card in the 1-1 draw against Brit's Pub FC the week before.)
Both teams had solid chances but were unable to break through for more scoring in the first half. Iguanas struck first in the second stanza as Mack Dykstra quickly converted an Eagle Street turnover to a goal. Iguanas took the lead about 10 minutes later after Josh Hanson finished a scramble off of a Jeremy Leinberger throw in deep in the box.
With Eagle Street in danger of suffering their first loss of the season, they found an equalizer very late in the match thanks to a rather lucky bounce. A shot from the top of the box was partially deflected by Leinberger and found its way past Scheunemann to seal the 2-2 draw.
After dropping their first two games of the 2013 campaign, Iguanas have gone unbeaten in their last three, picking up five points along the way. They'll look to get the full three points when they host Beer Engines FC at Vadnais Sports Center on Monday, June 17.
